The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg is accepting applications for its 2027/28 fellowship programmes, offering researchers the opportunity to spend a dedicated period developing their own research project in Freiburg.

The programmes are open to researchers from different disciplines and nationalities, with separate tracks for Early Career and Senior Researchers.

Fellowship tracks

Early Career Fellowship

For researchers who:

  • Hold a completed PhD.
  • Have a maximum of 8 years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Have at least 6 months of research or study experience abroad relative to the country where they obtained their first academic degree.
  • Meet the programme’s publication requirements.

The fellowship can last 4–10 months.

Senior Fellowship

For established researchers who:

  • Hold a completed PhD.
  • Have at least 8 years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Meet the programme’s publication requirements.
  • Have at least 6 months of research or study experience abroad relative to the country where they obtained their first academic degree.

The fellowship lasts 3–8 months.

Sustainable Governance Fellowship

FRIAS also lists a separate Sustainable Governance Fellowship for researchers based at African institutions working in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The duration is 6 months.

What does FRIAS provide?

Depending on the fellowship track and individual circumstances, support may include:

  • Financial/living support.
  • Travel costs.
  • Research cost contributions.
  • Office and workspace at FRIAS.
  • Access to University of Freiburg resources.
  • An international interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Practical support related to accommodation, childcare and visa arrangements.

Research environment

FRIAS fellowships are residential. Fellows are expected to be present full-time in Freiburg and participate in the institute’s interdisciplinary academic community. Fieldwork outside Freiburg cannot be funded during the fellowship period.

FRIAS welcomes researchers from a broad range of disciplines, including the natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, medicine and engineering, provided their research can be supported within the University of Freiburg.
